Twitter5For many years I hear operators everywhere telling me that they run their printers at lower resolutions as otherwise the ink consumption would be too high.This is actually a myth that's easy enough to prove wrong yet even harder to eliminate. Think about it: to print the same color you'll have to put the same amount of ink onto the substrate - that's it - resolution has absolutely nothing to do with that.So where does the myth come from and why is it so persistent?

Changing your printing preferences from Color to Grayscale when printing documents with only black text or images will allow the machine to use less of the color ink when printing the color black and will help avoid unnecessary color ink consumption.
Because the reason are the same people who keep the myth alive: lazy operators - or poorly trained ones (which means lazy managers)!Each printer + substrate type + print mode / resolution requires its own color profile, which regulates the ink usage for that particular mode. Lazy (or poorly trained) operators might name a profile only for the substrate type, so using that same profile for other print modes with higher or lower resolution will invariably change the ink usage, thus apparently substantiating the myth. But this will also change the color appearance, making the print look lighter or darker or upset the gray balance.In a nutshell: operators need to be aware that they have to name their color profiles properly to include information about the resolution or print mode the particular profile has to be used with. They should also create separate profiles for different modes where resolution and possibly ink application could vary (this depends on the printer - check with manufacturer or trainer or measure a control strip).Different resolutions or print modes serve different purposes.
Lower resolution modes often print much faster, allowing the production of large signs in a fraction of the time it would take producing it at high resolution with razor sharp detail. Some modes work better for flat color signage while others provide better detail and definition for photorealistic content. Slower print modes can also be very helpful on substrates where drying can be an issue and help avoid blotchy print appearance. There are also cases where a particular print mode can't put as much ink down as would be required to achieve the maximum gamut on a substrate.

In this case a mode that achieves that full gamut would use more ink - but for all colors that can be achieved in both modes the ink consumption would again be very similar.Ink consumption is also heavily influenced by settings within the color profile. Ink usage will be generally less if reducing the amount of light ink and ramping up black in the profile's separation settings (MaxGCR). Unfortunately this typically creates also a very grainy or peppered looking print, so it is important to determine a good balance between achievable ink savings and print smoothness. Again, this is where training on printer profiling comes in. Good printer profiles also allow better prediction of print results and less tweaks during production (a huge source of time and material waste).The best way to save ink is not the use of lower resolutions but to have the operators properly trained on printer profiling and keep good working practices with the color profiles in use.
