I actually use a very elementary editing program, so I am pretty sure that whatever you are using to edit your photos you will find an option to turn your photo into a black and white photo included. It’s always amazing to me how you can take a photo that’s already pretty cool and turn it into an entirely different more dramatic photo by just changing it to black and white format.I have found that you do have to play around a little to get your black and white photo to pop once you’ve converted it. I usually up the contrast and play with the levels a little until my formerly colorful photo starts to stand out in b & w. Sometimes converting your photo will turn a formerly too busy photo into something really striking.

I liked the original colorful version a lot but when I turned it into black and white it took the photo to a very cool different level. As you can see in the color photo below, the brownish light color parts to the left pull your eye away from the flower. While in black and white the light parts fade more into the background and the flower is more striking. I like the autumnal feel of the photo in color but I think it converted really well to black and white as well. Autumn sunsets come surprisingly early and suddenly there was the moon coming up over the hill in front of me. I didn’t have my tripod with me so I improvised and put the camera on a rock and set the timer to assure that the camera didn’t shake during the shot. While I like the original picture I couldn’t resist trying to make it black and white too.
